Prof. Tackson Kapika Lambart – Leading Academic Excellence as Deputy Vice Chancellor
Professor Tackson Kapika Lambart, a distinguished medical professional and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) at LAMU. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, Prof. Lambart has played a pivotal role in shaping the academic landscape of our institution.
Born on 25th December 1950 in Kaphika Village of Chief Kawaza in Katete District, Eastern Province, Zambia, Prof. Tackson Lambart’s journey in education and medicine began at a young age. He attended Mthunya Primary School, Seya Middle School, and Nyanje Upper School, where he completed his Standard Six in 1965. Throughout his formative years, Prof. Lambart received unwavering support from his grandmother, Madam Olipha Phiri, who nurtured his educational aspirations. This deep-rooted inspiration led Prof. Lambart to honor his grandmother’s legacy by establishing the “Grandmother Olipha Phiri Memorial Hospital” in Lusaka West, a testament to his commitment to healthcare and compassion.
In 1971, Prof. Tackson K. Lambart enrolled at the University of Zambia (UNZA) to pursue a degree in Medicine. His unwavering dedication and passion for anatomy led him to graduate from UNZA with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 1978. Following his graduation, Prof. Lambart embarked on a journey of professional growth and specialization. He began his internship at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka from 1978 to 1979.
His expertise in controlling cholera was recognized when he served as In-charge of Cholera Control at Mbala Hospital in 1979. Prof. Lambart’s commitment to surgical excellence propelled him to pursue further studies, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Medical Surgery (M.Med.Surgery) from the University of Dar-er-Salaam in 1983. This academic achievement paved the way for his appointment as a Senior Registrar in Surgery at Kitwe Central Hospital and later as a Consultant General Surgeon at UTH.
Prof. Lambart’s thirst for knowledge and innovation led him to undertake further training in Neurosurgery under the guidance of Prof. Lawrence F. Levy. In 1991, he was awarded a certificate in Neurosurgery in Harare, Zimbabwe. Drawing from his extensive experience, Prof. Lambart established the first Neuro Surgical Unit at UTH, where he served as the head until his retirement in 2007.
Beyond his surgical expertise, Prof. Tackson Lambart also delved into healthcare administration and management. He pursued training in Health Care Administration and Hospital Management at the Galilee College in Haifa, Israel, obtaining a Higher Postgraduate Diploma. In addition, his notable accomplishment includes being part of the team that successfully separated Occipital Craniopagus Type II Zambian Siamese Twins during a landmark 30-hour operation at Garankuwa Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, under the leadership of Prof. Ben Carson.
In 2008, Prof. Lambart became one of the Founder Members of Lusaka Apex Medical University. He has made significant contributions to the university’s academic landscape, serving as a professor of surgery since 2014. Currently, as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Lambart brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to guide LAMU towards academic excellence and innovation.
